St. Helen Hummingbird Feeders |
| |
| The 1980
eruption of Mount St. Helens created millions of
tons of volcanic ash. This ash contained 64% silica,
the basic ingredient of glass, and numerous other
elements like iron, silver, and gold. Our finely
created bird feeders in three wonderful colors
are the product of the Original Mt. St. Helens
Volcanic Ash Glass Studio. They are beautiful to
look at -- each a work of art. |

Nectar
Recipe: 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. This
recipe is closest to the natural nectar found
in flowers. Do not use red dyes/food coloring
and do not substitute honey for sugar!
|
- Bring to a boil to dissolve
sugar; excess food will keep in the refrigerator
for one week in a tightly covered container.
Do not substitute honey for sugar!
- Once the nectar has cooled,
hold the feeder upside-down, pour in the nectar,
then twist the cork. - Be Sure To Overfill
the Feeder - Put your finger over the spout
then turn the feeder right-side-up. When you
take your finger off the spout, it will spurt
once, forming a seal preventing it from dripping.
A small drip will form on the spout when the
birds feed.
- To prevent excess dripping
during hot days, chill nectar before filling
and avoid direct sunlight. Hummingbird feeders
should be placed in a shady area to discourage
bacteria and mold from spoiling the nectar.
Even if you still have nectar in your feeder,
you should replace it at least once a week.
- You may leave your feeder
out all year long for those hummingbirds that
do not migrate; however, be sure that the solution
does not freeze causing the glass to crack
and break.
|
| It is wise
to clean your hummingbird feeder every 2 - 3 days,
especially in hot weather. Nectar tends to "ferment" in
the hot weather and harmful bacteria will form.
(this will happen even if the feeder is not in
direct sunlight) Clean the feeder with a mild soapy
solution (no harsh chemicals) and bottlebrush.
Be sure to rinse very well in clear water to remove
all traces of soap residue!! |
